About Our Trainer - Gordon Fry

We are extremely proud of the KNX training we offer, and part of its success is down to our fantastic expert trainers. One of the key members of the team is Gordon Fry, an independent KNX Engineer with a wealth of knowledge about the industry and KNX.

Here Gordon tells us about his background with KNX.

Tell us about your journey into the world of KNX…

I graduated from Nottingham University with a degree in Electronics & Electrical Engineering. My first proper job was working in the analogue electronics field for Philips Components and Aztec before lifting the lid on KNX (or EIB as it was known then) in 2001. During this time, KNX was relatively unknown in the UK and I become involved with raising awareness of the protocol and promoting the business case for it, particularly in the residential market.

As Technical Manager of Dome Systems, I designed, installed and programmed a wide range of KNX projects, including at the Siemens offices and the London Excel Exhibition Centre.

Over the years, I’ve attended multiple KNX Training courses given by Axil Grossmann of Siemens, who at the time was the world's leading KNX Tutor. Mr Grossmann has now retired but over the last 31 years he has trained thousands of contractors, electricians, fitters, engineers, planners, system integrators and architects on KNX.

I worked as JUNG's Technical KNX Support Manager between 2011-2013 and joined BEMCO as their principal KNX Tutor in 2014.

What has been the biggest step forward in KNX in recent years?

It’s got to be the ability to build a panel off-site. This makes the installation much easier for the electrician as it is simpler to wire on site and saves time.

What is the key to a successful KNX project?

Communication. We’ve got to make sure that contractors on site have an understanding of KNX and how it works. It is important to build good relationships with key trades people who are interacting with the software / design.

"Getting it right first time" is crucial, so making a big effort at the outset to explain the system is essential. This helps enormously to ensure that any changes that are made are kept up to date and communicated to all involved.

Why BEMCO?

Bemco’s training facility is equipped with the latest technology and resources for integrators and electricians to familiarise themselves fully with the theory, know-how and the practical skills they need.

There’s also a range of courses on offer including a KNX Panel Building Course, KNX Refresher Course, Certified KNX Partner (Basic) Course, Certified KNX Advanced Course and a Certified KNX HVAC Specialist Course. Courses that suit electricians and integrators with varying levels of knowledge and experience.

I’m also impressed with Bemco’s level of technical support and assistance with system planning, design and installation. It’s a great help in managing the installation and also gives good practical aftercare for a system.

Why KNX?

It is a genuinely flexible platform. Over the years it has got better and better and it is now even more flexible and more user friendly. You can achieve all the functions you want, and you are not restricted to one manufacturer.

The understanding and technical knowledge Gordon has of KNX is unrivalled. Through his extensive training and hands on experience, he is equally adept at KNX problem solving and delivering projects, as he is at teaching KNX. Under Gordon, BEMCO has successfully trained over 250 KNX Partners in the UK.
